Friday, August 4, 2006 -- new study info

Good Morning

-- I had a couple of very early morning calls for work the last couple of days, so I wasn't able to get the email out.

-- as mentioned last week, I'm out this weekend -- we're going to the beach.

-- along those lines, I wanted to get a feel for what everyone's next couple of weekends are going to be -- we are supposed to start our new study, but I wanted to make sure we started with everyone -- does anyone plan to be out on vacation over the next couple of weekends -- maybe up through Labor Day?  We have the weekends of Aug 12-13, Aug 19-20, Aug 26-27, and Sept 2-3 (Labor Day weekend).

-- also, given the expense of the book, I think everyone is going to need to buy their own book (which will be about $15).   There is one copy I believe in the church library available to check out.  Here is a link to Amazon if you want to order online:

Nicole checked and said that the book is available on Overstock.com as well, at a slightly lower price.  I'm going to order the workbook to see if we will be able to use it/need it, or if we can do the exercises without needing the workbook. I think that if you order today or tomorrow from Amazon, I think you could use the slower but cheaper ground shipping.  I haven't checked Barnes and Noble or Cokesbury, Lifeway, etc, but I imagine that they would have at least one or two copies handy.

-- my thought is that everyone should try to have their book by Sunday, August 13 -- we would start our study then, with the first real class session beginning on August 20th (emails would begin on August 14th) UNLESS we had a bunch of folks out the weekend of August 20th.  So let me know whose planning on being away that weekend, if anyone.

Today's Scripture

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.  Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.   Honor one another above yourselves.  Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.  Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Share with God's people in need.  Practice hospitality.

Romans 12:9:13

Good Morning

Remember that we need to think about our next book/study.  We'll be through with this one in two weeks/10 days.  Need some suggestions/recommendations.

Today's Reading:    Revelation 20:11-15  , Barclay 220-222

-- doing a short section today to conclude chapter 20, more on Judgment Day.

-- Barclay's commentary today is about the references to the books used at the final judgment -- one book that records all the deeds of every person -- the other is the book of life, where the names of the believers are written.

-- the interesting thing to me is that it seems to me that everyone's name is written in the book of life to begin with, and that if you die withough having accepted Christ, then at that point your name is blotted out.  That to me makes sense, since acceptance of Christ is to live forever.  In other words, God starts you out in the book of life, and up until your last moment of life, you have the chance to make the committment to Christ, but after that, you are no longer alive, so your name must be blotted out of the book of life.  At least that is my reading of this section.

Today's Scripture

Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.  But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.

John 3:20-21

Good Morning

-- glad to see everyone on Sunday.

-- as we discussed, we'll begin study of the Max Lucado book "Cure for the Common Life" in a couple of weeks, once we get the books in, etc.  In the meantime, I'll keep the daily scripture and prayer requests going.

-- this is also a good time to review the email list -- if you are receiving this email and want to drop it, just hit Reply and put "unsubscribe" in the subject line.  On the other hand, if you know someone I need to add, just hit Reply and put "subscribe" in the subject line and then the new email address in the body of the email.

-- remember, you or someone else doesn't have to receive the email to keep up with the class -- the same content is available at the same time on the class blog, which is at www.leapclass.blogspot.com.  This is also handy if you can't get to your email, or if you want to look for something that was in an old email.  There is also a search function on the site that allows you to search for specific words or phrases.

Today's Scripture

Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:12-17

 Ellen Barrett

(I just noticed today that in my predawn haze I've been copying and pasting Elizabeth instead of Ellen, and since I think Elizabeth Barrett Browning is well past the need of prayer, we'll pray for Ellen today, just to make sure she is covered.  Sorry about that Ellen.)
